Not that we are obsessed by tales of pirates and seafaring miscreants, but... Madame Ching (Zheng Shi) rose from being a prostitute in a floating brothel in Canton, to commanding the notorious Red Flag pirate fleet which terrorized the South China Sea & coastal China in the early 19th century. At the peak of her success Ching commanded over 1,000 ships and upwards of 40,000 pirates. (By comparison, the famed pirate Blackheart commanded four ships crewed by 300 men within a similar timeframe). Ching imposed an extremely strict code of conduct for her fleet, including forbidding the rape of female captives on pain of death. Ching is considered the most successful pirate in history - inflicting defeats on Imperial Chinese, Portuguese and British fleets, and successfully negotiated her own retirement and the safety of the pirates under her command with the Chinese government. Ching lived peacefully running a brothel and gambling den until her death. Late one night a group of Garage Project beers found themselves at K Rd’s Lovebucket Bar. What happened next changed them profoundly. During the reign of Emperor Míng of Tang (713-756) fresh Lychees were considered a great delicacy, and were in such demand at the Imperial Court that a special courier service with fast horses was employed to bring the fresh fruit vast distances daily. Lychee also happened to be the favorite food of the Emperor’s favoured concubine Yang Yuhuan, and he would spare no expense ensuring a constant supply of Lychee to her quarters. Given the potential for Lychee related misbehaviour at this time of year, we felt it prudent to ask for a little protection from Maneki Neko (the Lucky Cat). La Calavera Catrina (‘Dapper Skeleton,’ ‘Elegant Skull’) first appeared as an etching (‘La Calavera Garbancera) by renowned Mexican illustrator José Guadalupe around 1910-1913. She was presented as a satirical portrait of wealthy native Mexicans who were adopting aristocratic French fashions, and wearing heavy make up to lighten their appearance and look more European in the pre-Mexican revolution era. She also figured prominently in the mural by Artist Diego Rivera ‘Sueno de in’s Tarde Dominical en la Alameda Central’ (Dream of a Sunday Afternoon in the Alameda Central). Painted between 1946-47, this mural depicts famous people and events from Mexican history, and focuses on bourgeois values and complacency in the lead up to the revolution. The mural was displayed in the Versailles restaurant Mexico City’s Hotel Prado, until the 1985 earthquake which destroyed the hotel. Late one night a group of Garage Project beers found themselves at K Rd’s Lovebucket Bar. What happened next changed them profoundly. During the heyday of rum running in the 17th & 18th centuries, smugglers favoured making landfall in Cornwall due to its abundance of secluded coves and inlets. In the event of unwanted attention from the constabulary, smugglers would weigh down barrels of rum and heave them overboard to be retrieved when the coast was clear. This resulted in the rum becoming contaminated with sea water. To render the now salty product drinkable, and more to the point, sellable, this rum was mixed with locally made shrub syrups - a tangy blend of fresh fruit, sugar and vinegar. To this day no visit to a Cornish pub is complete without partaking of a Rum & Shrub. This version is named for a much loved grandmother who was quite partial to rum & raisin, and a wee tipple - and whose family tree happens to trace back to Cornwall.
